In Damascus (2014)

Poetry Short Film

In Damascus is a cinematic homage to one of the world’s oldest cities. Set to Mahmoud Darwish’s poem The Damascene Collar of the Dove, the film blends imagery and poetry to offer a contemplative portrait of Damascus, capturing its timeless beauty and layered history.

Filmed shortly before the war in Syria, and edited over three years during a time of displacement, the film was more than just a project, it was my way to hold onto a fading home. I sought to capture the city’s soul—its alleyways and minarets, its ancient stones and vibrant atmosphere. The sound, inspired by memories of my father tuning his old radio.

Over time, In Damascus found resonance among many in the Syrian diaspora. It became, for some, a cinematic place to return to, offering comfort, memory, and a sense of belonging.

A decade after its release and with over 380,000 views online, the film continues to resonate, drawing audiences back to its imagery and poetry. It remains one of my most successful projects to date.

Its impact extended beyond digital platforms, gaining recognition at international festivals and from renowned media outlets.
